GBG at the British Birdwatching Fair

Posted on Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Late-August is ‘Birdfair‘ time as most keen birders and conservationists around the world will know, and the Great Bustard Group was at the Rutland Water site in force. Not only did Al (Dawes, GBG Project Officer) give an excellent talk about the re-introduction project to an enthralled audience in the afternoon, but the entire team was applauded by Dr Mark Avery, the RSPB’s Conservation Director at a reception hosted on the RSPB stand in the evening.

Visiting us on the stand were conservation luminaries like Tim Appleton MBE (co-founder of the Birdfair and Reserves Manager at Rutland Water) and BirdLife International’s Dr Nigel Collar (who began his work at what was then the ICBP on bustards, and is one of the warmest and friendliest conservationists you could hope to meet), as well as Mike Dilger, well-known as a presenter on BBC1′s ‘The One Show’. Also in attendance, we’re delighted to be able to say, were Anastasia Barsukova, Vladimir Provornov and Valentina Provornova – three members of the Russian team we work with who are in the UK on a visit.

We’ll have more text to accompany this short post once we’ve had a chance to order our thoughts, but the GBG has certainly come a very long way in its eleven years and our thanks go to all our supporters and volunteers who have helped us reach this point thus far. Here’s to the next eleven years!
