David Waters, Director of GBG, is in Russia and has sent the following short report via Blackberry:

“The autumn census in Saratov is now underway. This annual event, along with a spring census is funded by the GBG and carried out by the Severtsov Institute of Ecology (Saratov Branch).

This year David Waters and Mary Walden from GBG are with the team. There are 3 or 4 cars, each with 1 or 2 observers as well as the driver. A 20km by 20 km square is tackled by each team per day.

On the first day the 4th team blanked, but all the others found Great Bustards. I found 44 in a square not regarded as being good for Bustards. Surprisingly, I saw few other birds of interest, but am hoping for more today.

Due to poor internet connection photos will have to come later.”
