Qinetiq Energy

Posted on Friday, December 18th, 2009

Following the generous donation of a generator and a fund raising event recently, QinetiQ, an international defence technology company with several sites around Salisbury Plain, have now donated a surplus portable cabin to the Great Bustard Group (GBG). Our ‘new’ cabin was originally in place at one of QinetiQ’s testing sites in the heart of the Salisbury Plain MOD ranges, but has thankfully survived intact!

Before…

The new cabin will replace the smaller existing cabin at our release-site which has housed our shop and video display admirably for some years, but – as visitors will know – has been looking a little tired of late. The replacement will not only look better (once we’ve spruced it up) but is larger so allows us more space to display GBG merchandise while also providing a much-needed separate area for presentations to visitors.

Supplying a new cabin and removing the old one without disturbing the Bustards which frequent the nearby pen (a priority whatever the activities at the site) was not the easiest of jobs, but everything went very smoothly. Even the new foundations were prepared with the old cabin in place.

Once lifted by QinetiQ’s crane, GBG’s landlord was kindly on hand with a 40 foot trailer and tractor to transport the cabin across the remote training area to the GBG reintroduction site.

Once the concrete was ready, the removal of the old cabin and the delivery of the new one was organised and completed swiftly.

…after!

Our thanks go to all the staff at QinetiQ for organising and carrying out such a slick operation and all the GBG volunteers who helped with the preparations.

Work has started on refurbishing the new cabin but that’s another story, to be posted soon!

  • About Qinetiq: QinetiQ is an international defence technology company with several sites based around Salisbury Plain, one of which is locally referred to as The Bustard Site because of its close proximity to the Bustard Inn at Rolleston (which has hosted some (in)famously memorable GBG get-togethers!). We think Qinetiq is therefore a perfect fit for us and we thank them for being such wonderful supporters of the GBG.
