The Great Bustard Group's Cycling to Saratov sponsored event came to an end last week with a celebratory barbecue courtesy of Cholderton Farm Shop in Cholderton, Wiltshire. The Great Bustard Group team made it from Saratov in Russia to Salisbury in the UK, hypothetically of course as all miles were clocked up by the 8-strong team on the lanes of Wiltshire and in local gymnasiums. The team was delighted to raise a total of £920. A huge thankyou goes to John Chitty, the team's captain who gamely cycled on despite a knee injury and raised a vast amount of the group's total. Thanks are also due to the enthusiastic children and teachers of School No 1 in Krasny Kut, Russia who joined the GBG's UK cyclists in their own school grounds clocking up yet more miles towards the total.
David Waters did a grand job cycling on his own from Salisbury, making it to Lipetsk, just short of his target of Saratov due to spending the month of July importing this year's birds from Russia. He is not to be beaten however and continues pedalling to honour the challenge and we will report when he completes the final few miles. Huge congratulations to Dave who raised an incredible £1,133, making a grand event total of £2,053.
Following discussions with the team the money raised will now go towards rescuing more eggs next year and bringing the resulting chicks to Britain.
