Saratov update: Russian heatwave continues
Posted on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
GBG Director David Waters has returned to Russia to coordinate transportation of bustard chicks from Saratov to the UK:
“Very hot everywhere – over 40 degrees here in Karasney Kut.
We spoke to several coach drivers in the Saratov central station this morning and the roads to Moscow are currently open. [Thick smoke from huge peat and forest fires have been causing road closures all around Moscow for several weeks now.]
The option of flying the birds from Saratov to Moscow is fraught with difficulties and unknowns. We shall stick with the original plan of driving the birds to Moscow. We just hope the fires do not get worse between now and Thursday.
I am just arranging for the final veterinary inspection of the birds early on Thursday morning.”
